Balenciaga Forever
Saturday, October 3rd, 2009First legit post and what better way to start things off than to honor what we at Oma believe to be one of the most important and culturally influential design houses, oh, of all time? Balenciaga the house was launched in Paris in the 1930s by Cristobal Balenciaga, a native of Spain. His truest claim to fame came in the late 1950s, during which period he completely transformed the silhouette of fashionable dress. Gone was the cinched waist and accentuated bust of Dior’s “New Look”. Instead, Balenciaga introduced the “sack dress” and the “cocoon coat”, which both became famous for their balloon shapes. These pieces directly contradicted traditional ideas of feminine dressing and paved the way for the iconic looks of the 60s and beyond.
Today the house is creative-directed by Nicholas Ghesquiere who continues in the tradition of radical dressing. Consistently pushing the envelope, Ghesquiere, like his predecessor, sets the bar for the rest of the design world to follow. With nary a misstep, Ghesquiere is consistent in his production of unique yet wearable items. Here are a few looks from his Spring 2010 collection that debuted in Paris this past week.
